CGC and partners to update and expand training for anticipated standards changes

December 4th 2018 (Montreal / Ottawa) - The Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC) today announced that it will begin a comprehensive multi-year review and update of ground source heat pump industry training materials in early 2019, together with partners across Canada.

The process will include material found in the US-Canadian standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and will update the National Occupational Standards for GeoExchange Residential Installer and Designer. The update will be done in partnership with Electricity Human Resources Canada (EHRC), with funding from the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Initiatives Program.

“CGC is adapting its training to grow the world-class depth and breadth of Canadian industry expertise in heat pump technology, as well as to anticipate potential code changes over the next decade” said Ted Kantrowitz, CGC CEO. “The new training will leapfrog three revisions which Standards Development Organisations have engaged in over the last ten years, to use the latest available standard. These next-generation workforce development tools will be built for both Canadian and US jurisdictional use.”

“By putting in place the appropriate training supports for workers, Canada can minimize skills shortages and technological unemployment while advancing the clean energy agenda,” said Michelle Branigan, CEO, EHRC. “EHRC has partnered with CGC to support an update to the standards and training materials in the sector as part of a long-term strategic and national approach to human resource planning and training. This is critical to ensuring that we maintain the level of growth, reliability, safety and productivity in the energy system.”

As always, consultation will occur with Colleges and Institutes, utilities, technical experts and industry in each region and in both official languages. Course materials, aligned with and built to promote provincial building codes, national standards, and best practices, consist of eight (8) fully developed courses including an original CGC-authored textbook of 385 pages, and thousands of pages of material on topics including installation, design, geological analysis, and inspection.
